This handcrafted mug by Manabu Suehiro embodies 静謐 (seihitsu)—a sense of serene stillness held quietly in the clay. Though Suehiro is a respected master of Bizen ware, he is also profoundly engaged in reviving Sueki, the ancient gray stoneware made in Japan over 1,500 years ago. Its sharp facets, mineral textures, and calm, smoky tones reflect this pursuit, echoing the forms of vessels from some of Japan’s earliest high-fired kilns.
Each angle is hand-cut, giving the mug a sculptural presence, while the raw yet smooth interior feels grounding and calm. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece that blends archaeological inspiration with modern refinement. This everyday vessel carries both history and tranquility in your hands.
